Supporting children with special needs and their families

April 10 – 12, 2017, between 13.00 – 18.00, MIB headquarters

This workshop is an invitation to understanding and supporting children with special educational needs and their families. It is addressed to Montessori educators and assistants as well as to school and preschool counsellors and administrators. The workshop is also open to parents with children with special educational needs, and all those who have the opportunity to positively influence the development of a child with disabilities.

Nancy Lechner has worked with young children since 1977 and holds AMI diplomas at the Assistant to Infancy and Primary level and a Special Education AMI Certificate. She has presented parent workshops and staff development in California, Oregon, Texas, Australia, and Europe and has been a guest speaker in the Early Childhood Education Program at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. She and her sister, Patricia Wallner, are co-founders of Parent and Child Together, an education-based service offering parent coaching, private consultations, workshops and staff development. This is Nancy’s first visit to Romania and she will share her experience of working in the classroom with children with various special needs and as a parent of a child with disabilities.

During the three days, Nancy Lechner will present practical methods based on Montessori principles to identify and support children with various special needs. She will also guide educators and assistants working directly with parents on their way of accepting and supporting their child with love and understanding. This is the first essential step every family has to take. Then comes the professional who prepares the individualised work plan for the child and his family.

The workshop does not offer a specialisation of participants in working with children with special needs in terms of diagnosis and treatment, but provides awareness and information regarding this delicate and often avoided issue of the need for social integration of people with special needs.

The talks, the videos, the question and answer sessions, the syllabus and the rich experience of the trainer are reliable sources of professional and personal development for each participant. A unique experience and, for many of us, an absolutely necessary one!

The course is conducted in English with translation into Romanian.
